Yesterday, I cleaned out the studio and loaded up my van with the 12' long seamless paper roll and some smaller chunks. I decided to go find a place to recycle it whole, instead of trying to chop it up and put it in our always full recycling bin. I went by the Dan's grocery store on 23rd and 33rd, but the big blue bins that were always there were now gone.
I drove up the road looking fro some kind of recycling bin. I found myself going to REI, figuring they would have a big bin. I arrived and tried to shove th paper into the big recycling container, but fount he opening to be too small. I reloaded the van with the paper.
As I was closing the trunk and getting ready to leave, an REI employee comes to my car and says waving a finger in the air, "These are not public dumpsters!"
I reply, "I was just trying to recycle these big rolls of paper!"
She adds, "We have to pay to have this taken away, you know!?"
I ask, "Where do you suggest I recycle this paper?"
She replies with an even worse attitude, "Maybe take it out to the county landfill..."
(BTW the landfill is roughly 15 miles away)
I say sorry and drive away.
I get home and start thinking. The big, brown container said RediTherm on it. I google the company. It seems they use the paper to make cellulose insulation. I call them and ask if they charge people for the dumpsters. They laugh and said they actually pay the customer for the tonnage of paper. Why anyone would complain about adding more was beyond them.
I call REI at that point, and talk to the facility manager. I tell him what happened. He laughed with me and promised to let the employees know what the reality of the situation is.
I think this lady had compost for brains.... the raw manure kind. I plan on finding her at REI at some point and letting her know what I think of her.
